As reported by The Guardian, Jack Dorsey, the ever-paradoxical tech magnate, recently made a decision that left many in the industry reeling. Close to half of the staff at Block, formerly known as Square, found themselves on the receiving end of a sweeping layoff. What seemed to many as a drastically austere move was, according to Dorsey, an inevitable step toward ‘streamlining operations’.
Dorsey’s known preference for lean teams and efficient workings isn’t new. Itâs a well-documented fact heâs always viewed tech companies as ones that should operate with the minimal yet most effective staff strength. Each person in his company is expected to have the multiverse of skills to cover the role of at least a few.
However, this drastic shedding of staff – estimated at almost 45 percent of the workforce – has raised eyebrows. Many are questioning exactly what lies behind this decision. Was it purely for ‘operational efficiency’ or are there other hidden factors at play?
Unfortunately, only time can truly reveal what the motivation behind these layoffs really was, continuing the enigma that is Jack Dorsey’s strategic method of running his businesses.
