Artificial Intelligence (AI) has grown leaps and bounds over the years and continues to advance at a pace that exceeds our wildest dreams. However, as our creations get smarter, certain dystopian-minded individuals, often referred to as ‘doomers’, are predicting an imminent AI superintelligence apocalypse.
While these warnings have so far been pushed to the side as paranoia by many optimists in the tech industry, recent developments in AI technology raise questions. The doomer fear isn’t about rogue killer robots but rather the loss of human control over complex systems. We’ve seen AI make significant strides in areas such as self-driving cars, predictive analytics, voice recognition, and even deep fake technology.
Does this mean we will soon find ourselves living in an episode of ‘Black Mirror’? Not necessarily. Many AI experts still believe in regulation and education to keep AI beneficial. Advancements in AI shouldn’t be a reason to hide under our beds but rather an incentive to prepare and adapt.
