For most of baseball history, the swing was something you had to see to understand. Scouts described it in adjectives â quick, loose, violent, short â and fans judged it by the sound off the barrel and where the ball landed. Now, thanks to bat tracking technology, the swing has become something you can measure, chart and replay frame by frame.
MLB.com’s latest look at Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor puts that technology to work on one of the sport’s most recognizable swings.
From eye test to data set
Bat tracking, rolled out league-wide through MLB’s Statcast system, captures the movement of the bat itself rather than just the outcome of the pitch. Cameras and computer-vision models follow the barrel through its path, producing measurements of how fast the bat is moving at the point of contact, how long the swing takes, how far the barrel travels and the angle at which it meets the ball.
The result is a picture of the swing as a physical event, independent of whether the batted ball found a gap or landed in a fielder’s glove. That distinction matters. A hitter can be squaring balls up beautifully and still run into a stretch of hard-hit outs, or he can slap a few bloopers and look better in the box score than he does in the batter’s box. Why Lindor is a natural subject
Lindor has long been the kind of hitter who defies simple categorization. He is not the biggest man on the field, yet he generates real power from both sides of the plate. He is a switch-hitter, which means he is effectively maintaining two swings â two sets of mechanics, two timing patterns, two relationships with the strike zone â at the same time.
That makes him an unusually interesting subject for visualization. Bat tracking allows for a direct side-by-side comparison of a switch-hitter’s two swings: whether the barrel travels the same distance from the right side as it does from the left, whether the speed matches, whether the swing plane tilts differently against different pitch types. Those are questions that used to be answered by feel and film study. Now they can be plotted.
What the visuals add
The appeal of this kind of analysis isn’t the raw numbers so much as the images they produce. Swing paths rendered as arcs in three-dimensional space show where a hitter’s barrel lives, which parts of the zone he covers naturally and which pitches force him to adjust. Overlaying multiple swings reveals consistency â or the lack of it â in a way a single highlight clip never could.
For coaches, that has obvious practical value in diagnosing slumps and tracking mechanical changes. For fans, it offers a new vocabulary. Instead of arguing about whether a hitter looks late on fastballs, you can look at the data and see it.
The bigger picture
Bat tracking is still a relatively young addition to baseball’s analytical toolkit, and the sport is only beginning to work out how best to interpret it. But features like this one â taking a well-known player and rendering his swing in measurable form â are how new data becomes part of the conversation.
