Why Apple Still Hasnât Cracked AI
Apple Inc., the leading tech giant known for its innovative products from the iPhone to the Mac, continues to lag in the AI (Artificial Intelligence) domain. While its competitors like Google, Facebook, and Amazon are making significant strides in AI, Apple appears to be stuck in a slow crawl.
One key reason for Apple’s lackluster performance in AI is its commitment to user privacy. AI algorithms thrive on data. The more data an algorithm can analyze, the better its performance gets. But Appleâs stance on user privacy prevents it from harvesting the amount of user data that other companies collect to feed their AI algorithms.
Also, Appleâs culture of secrecy may be hampering their AI progress. Theyâre known for keeping things close to their chest, and this runs counter to the trend in AI research, which is increasingly open and collaborative.
Itâs not all doom and gloom for Apple, however. The tech giant has made strides in specific AI domains like on-device machine learning. But until Apple can resolve the tension between user privacy and the data needs of AI or change its culture to one that encourages openness in research, it could continue to lag behind its competitors in the AI race.
