In a recent interview with the Financial Times, CEO Luis von Ahn addressed Duolingo‘s shift towards an AI-first approach and confessed that the pushback from users was unexpected.
“We truly believed that leveraging artificial intelligence would fully enhance our app’s user experience,” von Ahn said. “However, we didn’t take into account how this transition might feel to our longtime users.”
The move towards AI has indeed stirred controversy. Many users expressed concerns about privacy and the impersonality of automated learning. Von Ahn expressed regret for the oversight and pledged to better communicate changes moving forward.
